I am a bookstore, but not just any bookstore. I am the Taschen Flagship Store in SoHo, New York City. I was designed by Philipe Starck, and if I do say so myself am quite beautiful. I am made mostly of sprayed concrete and glass. My walls are covered in beautiful artwork by Beatriz Milhazes, made just for me! I have one of a kind bookshelves that sprout out of the floor on concrete stalks. I also have a jaw droppingly beautiful gallery set beneath cavernous skylights, with a brushed copper trademark Starck column. Do you like furniture? I do (of course, I'm a building, I can't help it). I have some sleek Eames chairs and if you're looking for a place to relax and check out some books, I also have a buttery leather Arne Jacobson Egg chair as well. I love books, but at heart I can be pretty geeky. I have a booming sound system, and the high ceilings I have make everything from Edit Piaf to The Ramones sound amazing. My video displays are most impressive. Not just because there's 24 of them either. They're ultra sharp extra large flat panel monitors, and I like to play custom videos you can't see anywhere else from some of the best artists in the world like David LaChapelle and Peter Beard.
Did I mention my book collection? It's out of hand. Taschen publishes the most interesting and unique books in the world, and I'm lucky enough to have copies of all of them for you to take a look at. I have copies of 'Sumo' by Helmet Newton which is physically the largest book published in the 20th Century. It's so big in fact, that it comes with a special table designed by my pal Philipe Starck just to hold it. What's that? You live in New York and your apartment is tiny? Yes, I understand. That's OK. I also have have the best collection of art books for $10 dollars. They're even small enough for the studio you share with 3 other friends.
Of course I like Architecture - I'm a building. I'm no one trick pony though. I love painting, movies, design, photography, music and...Sex. Well, where do you think those very tiny studio apartments dotting the city come from anyway?
Enough about me. What do you like? I'd rather talk in person though, so here's a person invitation to come over and have some coffee (I have a very cute espresso machine as well) and talk about books. I tend to be a little shy in person, but I have some nice friends who work here, they're over caffeinated and love to chat about books and art. They're really smart and know lots and lots about books. They're book people, but they're also photographers, designers, painters, poets, musicians, architects, and boy can they dance!
I'm easy to find, I'm right in SoHo in Manhattan at 107 Greene Street, between Prince Street and Spring Street. If you don't feel like walking or riding your bike, I'm a very short walk from the N/R train at Prince Street, and also pretty close to the 5/6 at Broadway Lafayette. The West 4th Street stop on the F/V and A/C/E is only 6 short blocks away as well. So stop by and say 'Hello', I'm new to the neighborhood and I'm looking to make some friends in New York.
